The European ancestors of Ellis Levi Wheeler, my paternal grandfather, were granted land bounties in South Carolina’s Dutch Fork before the American Revolution. The Dutch Fork is located in the fork between the Broad and Saluda Rivers.

My 6x great-grandparents, Solomon and Margaretha Ade and their young son, Johann Heinrich, arrived in Savannah, Georgia in 1738. To pay for their passage, they were sent to work at the Salzburger community at Ebenezer. Within months, it was requested that Solomon, “a most offensive man”, be sent back to Savannah.
